Stay of Execution for Quincy Allen

Quincy Jovan Allen

The South Carolina Supreme Court has granted Quincy Jovan Allen a stay of execution, so that his attorneys can file a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court. Their concern is that in South Carolina inmates who plead guilty lose their constitutional right to a jury trial and are sentenced by judges. Mr. Allen is not expected to be given another execution date before March 16.

Passage of Racial Justice Act "A Great Spiritual Victory" Say Supporters

With the passage of the NC Racial Justice Act by the NC Senate yesterday by a vote of 25-18 the State of North Carolina stepped up to lead the South away from the worst of its racist past. The bill allows for court reviews over capital defendants' claims that racial bias influenced their cases. Gov. Bev Perdue is expected to sign the bill into law soon.
